How to Play Chess Online With a Friend: Private Rooms, Invite Codes, Zero Setup

By SumoPlay · Beginner friendly · 5 min read

Two friends at a cafe table playing a chess game against each other on their phones

The best chess opponent is not a grandmaster and not a random stranger — it's your friend, the one whose blunders you remember and whose revenge matches keep you up at night. The friction is everything around the game: accounts, friend requests, "wait, what's your username again?" Here is the zero-setup way to duel, using private rooms and a single invite code.

The 60-second setup

  1. Both of you install the app — that's the only requirement. No accounts for a friendly game.
  2. One player taps Create Room. The app generates a private room with an invite code.
  3. Share the code however you normally talk — a message, a call, across the café table.
  4. Your friend taps Join by Code, enters it, and you're playing. Real-time, just the two of you, nobody else can wander in.

Guest mode is what makes this work: a friendly duel shouldn't need a password, a profile, or a verification email. The room code is the invitation.

Warm up against the AI first (your pride will thank you)

If one of you hasn't played in years, ten minutes against the computer first keeps the duel honest. Practice mode with three difficulty levels lets you pick your punishment — the Medium level plays around 1500, strong enough to expose rusty openings without humiliating anyone. Choose your side (White for the first-move advantage, Black for the counter-punching practice), flip the board whenever you like, and restart freely — it's training.

Friendly-duel etiquette (unofficial, strictly enforced)

Agree on rematch rules before the first game — "best of three" has ended more arguments than any arbiter. Loser plays Black next game. A blundered queen earns exactly one (1) screenshot of mockery, not a week of it. And if the game turns into a lesson, the winner explains the key idea afterward: duels get better when both players level up.

When you outgrow friendly games: ranked

Eventually you'll want to know how good you actually are. That's when the account earns its keep: sign in with Google and your games count toward the ranked leaderboards, with an Elo profile that starts at 1200 and tracks your matches, win rate, wins, losses and draws. Same app, same board — pick from four board themes (Classic Wood, Tournament Green, Royal Midnight Blue, Charcoal & Pearl Slate) and climb.

Start your chess night

Chess Duel: Play Chess Online was built around exactly this flow — private rooms by invite code in guest mode, a 3-level AI for warm-ups, and Google Sign-In ranked play with Elo profiles when you're ready. It's free on Google Play (contains ads) and speaks six languages. Send your friend the code, and may the best blunder win. ♟️
